The Cause Of Reflux and How We Treat With Acupuncture
Contrary to what you may have been told “Reflux” or GERD does not occur because you have too much stomach acid, rather you have too little stomach acid. In normal digestion, “when the healthy, strong stomach acid comes in contact with the duodenum, it sends a signal electrically to the sphincter at the top of the stomach telling it to close. Weak stomach acid does not send this signal and the stomach sphincter remains open. Stomach contents can then escape into the esophagus causing GERD and heartburn” (1)
So how do we treat reflux in acupuncture? When you come to the clinic what I’m going to do is first make sure you have enough Qi or Lifeforce in your Stomach/Spleen circuit. We then direct the stomach Qi downward (which is it’s natural path). Next we sooth the liver, because when the liver gets agitated (through stress or strong emotions) it does not play nice with your digestion. Lastly, we tonify the kidneys which help the spleen do its job of transforming the food we take into the stomach.
In addition, we make sure your getting the raw materials you need in your diet to make healthy stomach acid.
If reflux, bloating, pain, IBS or some other digestive issue is keeping you from doing the things you love to do, don’t hesitate to call, email or book an appointment. I am here to help and I love helping people so they can get back to living!
