Why I Chose To Become An Acupuncturist.

Humanity Acupuncture Stony Brook, NY.

I’m often asked what led me to become an acupuncturist. Most of us have come to this beautiful, ancient medicine through some sort of personal ordeal. My story is no different.

Prior to deciding to study acupuncture, I had gone through a period of about 14 months where I experienced 5 deaths in my immediate family. My father, my two Great Danes, my aunt, and my cousins husband. 3 of these deaths happened within 2 days of each other. I cried, and did my best to work my way through the grieving process. What a minefield it was. None of us are really ever prepared to face the passing of of loved one, let alone 5 in such a short time.

Very shortly after, my body starting manifesting crazy symptoms, like I had never experienced in my entire life. The most troubling of which was waking every night usually between 3AM-5AM (these are the hours of the day paired with the “lungs” in eastern medicine) The lungs are associated with the emotion of grief. I would wake each night with horrible twisting, empty pain below the sternum, followed by inability to fall back asleep. This went on for many months. I felt like the walking dead. There were other symptoms too. I literally thought my body was shutting down, and I might not make it. I thought I had grieved. Why was my body turning on me? Western medicine had no answers for me. I would not wish that experience on my worst enemy.

It was not until I discovered acupuncture, and started getting consistent weekly treatments (initially sometimes twice a week) that things starting turning around in a big way. My body and spirit gradually calmed down and once again came back into balance. Acupuncture was a godsend for me!

It was then that I knew I wanted to study and learn all that I could (a lifelong study), so that I could go on and bring this kind of healing and hope to others. Hope of a better way, of feeling at ease within ones own body. That is my hope for you.
